What ideas can you give me to create a separation between the main entrance of my home and my living room?

Open floor plans have become the standard in most new home and condo construction. However, this bright and modern layout often comes with a lack of privacy and room definition. Luckily, there are several great solutions to fit any style and budget.

Furniture

An area rug combined with a simple bench or console table is a popular choice to define an entryway. However, open style bookcases are also easily available in many styles, sizes and colours and act as an instant wall, providing separation while still allowing light to filter into both spaces. Along with displaying collectibles, art and accents, bookcases can also hold attractive baskets or bins for storage.

Screens

If space is tight and furniture is not an option, screens are a perfect, no fuss solution. There are many choices available in materials ranging from bamboo, plastic, metal and even fabric; these allow homeowners to not only create definition between rooms, but also make a decorative statement.

With a little imagination, a blank canvas floor screen can be painted, upholstered or wallpapered into a  piece of art.
