Q. I built a roof over our patio and I'm now considering lighting but don't know what to do. The patio roof is 16 feet wide by 24 feet long. I'm not sure if I should go with pot lights or hanging lights. What do you suggest?

Adding lighting to your covered outdoor space will definitely help make the patio a more welcoming gathering spot and extend the hours of entertaining and enjoyment well into the evening. Here are various types of lighting to use according to your needs.

Pot lights

Pot lights have the advantage of being discreet and practical. These lights will enhance your layout and light up the desired areas, depending on the light intensity desired.

Wall sconces and  hanging lights

Wall mounted or hanging lights, such as a chandelier, will provide you the right lighting and add a unique touch to your decor. A great option for families with young children or pets.

Table or floor lamps

Table or floor lamps specifically designed for outdoor use can also be an interesting option, especially if you plan to create an outdoor living room. By choosing this kind of lamp, you will be able to adapt your layout to your needs.

Tip to consider: the use of light bulbs with fewer watts than what you might normally use indoors, or better yet, install a dimmer. Soft lighting combined with a few candles or an outdoor fireplace will set the mood for a comfortable and relaxing space everyone will enjoy, day and night!
