Padded upholstery has such a snug, comfortable look. This decorative bed wall panel is no exception, and the wide variety of fabrics and paint colours on the market mean that it can be made to match any decor.
Here is how to build an upholstered bed wall panel. Measuring approximately 27" x 67" with its frame, this bed wall panel is made from a plywood base upholstered with padding and fabric. The frame is attached to plywood strips fastened to the back of the base.
Preparing the parts
-
Cut two strips of 4" x 96" in the plywood, then cut each of these strips to a length of 64".
-
Cut the rest of the plywood sheet to 59 1/2".
-
Cut this piece in two lengthwise, so as to obtain two pieces of approximately 20" x 59 1/2".
-
Using wood glue, stick these two pieces of plywood together, one on top of the other. Weigh them down with some heavy objects and leave the glue to dry.
-
From the leftover (36 1/2") piece of plywood, cut two strips of 4" x 16".
-
Paint the moulding. It will be cut and adjusted to fit the panel once the upholstery is in place, since the padding and fabric are difficult to measure accurately beforehand.
Assembly
-
Staple a first layer of padding onto the 20" x 59 1/2" plywood structure, covering an area of approximately 19" x 59".

-
With the padded side face down, lay the plywood on top of another piece of padding of approximately 28" x 68". Fold the excess padding over onto the back of the plywood, then staple in place.

-
Lay the board, still face down, on top of a piece of fabric of approximately 30" x 70". Fold the excess fabric over onto the back of the plywood, then staple in place.

-
Screw the two 4" x 64" strips to the back of the plywood, over the fabric, so that they jut out from the edge of the plywood by 2" at the ends and along the side.

-
Screw the two 4" x 16" strips to the back of the plywood, between the 64" strips, so that they too jut out from the edge of the plywood by 2".
-
Take the measurements for the mouldings (from one corner of the upholstered surface to the other), then cut them to the required lengths, at a 45° angle.
-
Nail the mouldings onto the plywood strips using the pneumatic nailer.

Attach the finished panel to the wall with suitable picture hooks. Screw into the wall studs for greater solidity.
