I don’t have enough space at home for a holiday tree. Do you have any alternatives for where I can place gifts?

Leaving gifts at the base of a holiday tree is a long-standing tradition. However, for those who have limited space for a tree or aren't keen on re-arranging furniture to accommodate one, here are a few alternatives:

A fireplace with its decorated mantel makes a perfect spot to arrange holiday gifts.  Make a tidy pile on the floor in front of or to the side of the fireplace, and even incorporate a few small gifts onto the mantel itself.

Most household coffee tables are used as a place to put up our feet or to keep the television remote handy.  Why not turn this under-used piece of furniture into the star of the holidays?  Wrap presents in beautiful holiday paper and ribbon that coordinates with the room’s colour scheme and arrange them on top or underneath the table.   Add holiday candles or a vase of ornaments to compliment the display.

During the holidays, the staircase often gets attention with a decorated garland weaved in and around the banister.  This can make for a natural backdrop to place gifts, either artfully stacked at the bottom of the stairs or even on the stairs themselves.  A nearby chair or entryway table can also accommodate the overflow of gifts when family and friends stop in with their own presents.

Lastly, try re-imagining items that you already have such as storage baskets, a wooden sleigh or wagon hiding in the garage, even grandpa's old leather trunk. Even book-shelves in the family room can be temporarily used to display and keep gifts until the holidays are over.
