I want to redecorate my home office and change the desk. I have leather furniture and the storage units are glossy white. The room is quite dark and I’m not sure which paint colour to use. Do you have any suggestions?

Whether you work from home full-time or just need a quiet space for doing paperwork, paying bills and sending off emails, a functional home office has become a must.

Before picking out a paint colour, think about the overall feel that you want to have in your office. For a bright, modern and crisp look, purchase a white desk to match your existing storage furniture. Paint the walls anything from creamy whites to pale, earthy colours, then add bursts of colour with the help of storage boxes, lamps or blinds.

If you prefer an office decor with a little more character but still want to keep the furniture white, choose a bright paint colour, such as lime green, or add points of interest with bands or striping.

Another alternative would be to go with the flow of the room. If it's a dark space, then work with it! A darkly lit office can actually be quite relaxing and calming. Paint the walls a deep, rich colour and even consider painting the existing office furniture as well.

However, be sure to install adequate overhead lighting as well as task lighting. Shop around to find a unique wood, metal or glass desk in order to make this piece the focal point of the room.
