Designing a comfortable, functional and inviting living room in a narrow space can seem like a daunting task. However, a number of simple decorating tricks can be used to make this central room appear much more spacious than it really is. Operation illusion!

- In narrow living room spaces, windows should be showcased as much as possible. Avoid dark curtains or shades, opting instead for pale-coloured window dressings. In doing so, you will give the window greater prominence while also allowing more light to enter the room.

- It’s well known that dark colours are to be avoided in narrow spaces. Here, the white textured walls and sheer curtains seem to exude a feeling of calm and make the room appear wider.

- When space is limited, it’s preferable to adopt a more reserved design approach. Earth tones or shades of white combined with a streamlined decor will make the living room area a welcoming place to sit back and relax.

- Multiple sources of lighting are also an effective way to make the room appear larger than it really is.

- Divide the room into separate areas using panels or screens that allow the passage of natural light. Even a narrow living room can have more than one function. In fact, distinct sections will actually help balance out the overall space, making it seem less narrow and elongated.

- Focus on practicality and functionality! Storage cabinets that melt into the colour scheme, drawers tucked neatly under the sofa and generous shelving units will all provide additional storage space in a small living room.

- In the case of a truly tiny living room space, stick to the basics. A wall-mounted flat screen TV, comfortable seating and a small coffee table along with a lamp, shelves or a picture or two are sufficient. It’s preferable to keep it simple as too many furnishings or decorative accents will only make the room seem even smaller.

- While pale colours will make the room feel more spacious, darker shades can still be used to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. Feel free to incorporate a few opaque colour accents in your living room decor.

- Relatively easy to make, a built-in sofa is an excellent way to save precious space. They can be customized according to the room’s shape and dimensions in order to provide maximum seating.

- A low-seated corner sofa can also be used to optimize the available space while increasing seating room.
