It's time to put away the nautical throw pillows and remove the bright floral wreath on the front door. Here are some easy tips to warm up your home for the longer and cooler months ahead.
Fabrics can dramatically change the mood of a room. Autumn is the perfect time to add a thick throw blanket to the sofa for those chilly evenings and to layer a sheepskin rug by the fireplace or at the foot of a favourite chair. Think to replace the silky floral pillows with velvet or wool ones and change out the bright cotton doormat for one that is thick and rugged and can withstand wet boots.
The garden may no longer be in bloom but that doesn’t mean you need to put away your favourite vase! Instead, fill it with ornamental grass clippings or branches from an oak or maple tree. Light candles with earthy scents and change out the family summer beach photos with more current ones. Finally, take a cue from the season and fill a bowl with apples, gourds or nuts and display a seasonal ornament off a chandelier or picture frame.
Warm jewel-toned dishes, glassware or placemats combined with candles and containers filled with seasonal clippings will encourage guests to linger at the dinner table just a little longer! By installing a dimmer, you will be able to modulate the lighting of the room, and create a warm ambiance in the dining room.
Don't forget about your home's entranceway! A wreath or a planter filled with boughs is a great way to add colour and perfume to your home, and of course, to make it feel more welcoming.
