How can a room appear brighter if there is no natural light ?
Shannie - Regina, Saskatchewan

The answer to this question is ‘borrowed’ light. There are numerous ways to borrow light when a room is not well equipped with the natural source. It can be a problem even if a space has windows, depending on the direction they face or obstacles in front of them. Here are a few tips to making a room appear brighter.

Lighting

It is important to have a variety of different light sources. The ‘magic trio’ includes: general lighting, which can be your ceiling fixture; task lighting, such as table lamps or pendants and accent lighting, such as wall sconces. Light fixtures should be equipped with the maximum permitted voltage and placed on a dimmer for optional adjustment. Ceiling lighting, frosted glass fixtures, such as linen shades, provide a soft, diffused light with a good coverage.

Paint

A light paint tone for the walls makes a room appear brighter. This does not limit the choice solely to white. On the contrary, the choices may include almost all colours. When selecting paint, remember that yellow and red pigments are warm and blue pigments are cooler. This does not mean that all blues are cool, it simply refers to the additional pigment in the paint formula. Thus, a blue with purple undertones will have a warmer feeling because of the combination of red pigment in the paint.

White rooms have passed the test of time in terms of style. Choosing the right white is very important when the application includes the entire wall surface and not just the baseboards. Understanding the difference between a cool white and a warm white will help achieve the desired look.

Materials

Mirrors serve two purposes: to make a space appear larger and, secondly, to reflect existing light. In a situation where there is no natural light source, it is wise to place light fixtures in front of mirrors to maximize the amount of light they provide. In addition, mirrors are not confined to the traditional use of adorning a wall. There are a multitude of furniture pieces finished in mirror, such as coffee tables, end tables, dressers etc.  These pieces will help brighten a room that has low natural lighting.

Glass works in a similar fashion to mirror. Although it does not have the same degree of reflection, its translucent quality provides an open feeling.

Accessories

Accessories are the details that complete a look. They have a powerful impact when done right. In order to brighten a room, light coloured accessories, floral arrangements and reflective materials are a must.
