Summer has arrived, it’s now time to escape the hectic city lifestyle and get out to the country for some rest! As with any home, there is often a to-do list of chores and repairs waiting to get done. More often than not, however, these second homes don’t receive enough attention and care. Here are a few basic tips to spruce up the cottage without overly compromising your precious days off!

The view :

Whether it’s a lake, beach, mountain or lush landscape, this view is what makes the cottage or chalet so special. Take care of it by clearing it of debris and overgrown trees.

The facelift :

A fresh coat of stain or paint to the deck, dock, shutters or screened porch will not only protect it longer from the elements but will also make it feel newer, cleaner and more charming.

The decor :

Many cottages end up looking like a storage ground for hand-me-downs and mismatched furniture. This summer, consider getting rid of some items while painting and slip-covering others.

A bold, bright colour can add new life to an otherwise old chair or table. Even worn flooring can get an unexpected facelift with a little paint and stencil. Thrift stores and antique markets are also a great place to shop for items that don’t cost a bundle but add unique charm and character to a room.

The great outdoors :

Summer life at the cottage is all about enjoying the outdoors. Maybe it’s time to screen in that porch from the bugs and add an outdoor rug to create a seating area for gathering around in the evenings.

The exterior shower

By installing an exterior shower, you will avoid the problem of bringing outdoor grime into your cottage. The exterior shower is ideal to use after outdoor activities, or simply as a refreshing treat during the summer heat. You can also benefit from your shower from season to season, as the solar showers provide hot water.
