When classic meets contemporary and they live happily ever after. From traditional lines to modern furniture, discover what this new style is all about!

Traditional home decor has evolved over the past several years to become cleaner and more relaxed. No need to choose between a traditional style or a completely modern-tech space. A middle ground now exists for those who appreciate classic lines in interiors and furnishings, but also enjoy a clean, light, and modern look. Here is the New Traditional, a refined, creative trend in design that shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Traditional tends to take its cues from the Old English design style – a relaxed yet elegant design –  that features comfort, matching furniture, dark woods, saturated colours, heavy window treatments, floral prints and patterns. Think of a traditional library with dark wood, comfortable leather furniture, brass fixtures and an antique Oriental rug. The New Traditional style still offers comfort, with slightly sparser, sleeker lines, lighter colours, quirkier fabrics or pillows and the freedom to mix and match furniture, finishes, accessories, and periods.

This new style still rests on the foundation of traditional design, but the look is updated in new and unexpected ways. For example, a fresh, modern fabric may be used to cover an antique chair. A traditional lamp base can be updated with a modern shade. Furniture can combine different styles. A French commode could be painted in a bright, bold colour. There are many different ways to decorate with a nod to tradition while maintaining a firmly planted foot in modern design.

Another popular trend in New Traditional is natural, organic materials for upholstery, drapery and fabrics. Linen is also very significant; whether you chose plain linen curtains or ornate embroidered bed linens, it offers a relaxed yet elegant look. This return to basics, when juxtaposed with modern technology, represents a perfect example of this new style.

The rich, saturated colours of old world design are now lighter but more muted –  aqua, mint green, and off-white. Historical architecture and furniture can feel heavy and sombre, but they can be toned down with fresh colours and modern flair; you can breathe new life into historical pieces with pops of fresh colour. Varying finishes and accessories can be brought in and mixed together to create interesting contrasts: light and dark woods, leather and creamy linen, your media collection and your art collection.

In New Traditional where formal meets casual and old peacefully coexists with new, the result is an elegant, personal, fresh, and liveable space.
