You have a big garage but it is a complete mess? You want to work there but can’t because the room is too dark? Here are some tips to help you design your garage to meet the needs of the entire family and create the perfect work space for you.

Start by doing a major clean up! This is the perfect time to reconsider all of the things you have accumulated in this space and want to get rid of. Don’t be afraid to throw things out. Nothing should be left on the floor.

Once you have a better idea of what you have, start sorting your things by categories like car, tools, gardening, sports, camping or cleaning. Then assign them a place in the garage.

Invest in some storage solutions to help you organize the clutter: wall panels, hooks, shelves, cabinets, large plastic bins, etc. Choose storage systems that allow you to clearly see what you are storing, like transparent containers, for example.

To maximize space, you can hang your tires from the ceiling, and hang bikes from hooks on the walls. Don’t forget the unused space — it’s the perfect place to build a small mezzanine.

Good lighting is also important since it allows you to make great use out of your garage. However, try not to overuse the light from your electric garage door opener since it is not intended for long-term use. Instead, install long fluorescent tubes in the ceiling. To illuminate your workspace, put in some accent lighting underneath the shelves and cabinets that surround it. If security is not an issue, you can add windows to your garage door to let in natural light.
