Colin & Justin want a happy new year for homes across Canada, so a few designer resolutions are just what’s needed to get home decor just right!

It’s January the 1st and the resolutions are coming thick and fast – losing weight, stopping smoking and getting fit are all on the agenda. In C&J land, we’re thinking of arresting some of your other home design related bad habits, so repeat the following resolutions and change your ways… once and for all!

I Will Make My Storage Beautiful And Practical

Promise to lose the clutter and then use your wall shelves and cabinets to mix books with accessories – but do it in a tasteful way. Don’t cram things in, leave breathing space and use stacks of books to add shape, while interspersing the space with smart accessories or even small framed artworks.

I’ll Try Mixing Old and New Pieces To Create An Individual Look

No more cookie-cutter styling shopped from one store to make your home look like a catalogue page. Find your own personal style and make your home your own. Splash out on an individual piece that really stands out – a great piece of art for example.

I Promise To Break Up The Beige

Use patterns on curtain fabrics, floor rugs, sofas, bed dressing and cushions to add a personal ‘at home’ style. Get informed through magazines like Ronamag and learn how certain colours and pattern combinations can be used. For example, blue and white with stripes feels very nautical.

I Will Have An Organized Home

Organized homes have storage, systems and rules and, while that might sound off putting, organization will make your home more efficient, keep it tidier for longer and make it easier to live in. Get the whole family involved and finally clear up that garage so you can actually get the car back in! Purchase laundry baskets for all bedrooms and replace mismatched crockery – matching sets look much better.

I’ll Try Upscale Upcycling

Before you throw out old furniture, think about how spot recycling and repurposing could transform it from trash to treasure. A new paint job, a repair or two or even just a change of use can reap rewards without breaking the bank. A dressing table with drawers, for example, could be turned into a vintage style sink vanity.
