Bohemian chic (Boho chic) design style blends multiple different colours, antiques, thrift store finds, and items from around the world with more modern, updated pieces, into an eclectic and fun mix that genuinely reflects your personality. All of the pieces in the room could rightly stand on their own, but together, they create a unique decoration.

The essence of this style is artistic, individual, and fun. Reinvent items you have in your home, such as picture frames and fabrics, while incorporating accessories, textiles, and art objects from around the world. Warm, bright colours and nostalgic items collected from your travels will brighten your decor.

Vintage items are important in the Boho chic style. Scour flea markets, antiques shops, or your grandparents’ attics! From '50s vinyl chairs in a kitchen, to ‘70s-inspired wallpaper, any era or part of the world is acceptable in Boho. If you like it, you can make it work!

Display your Boho

Large pieces of art work or a large mirror can be leaned against the wall rather than hung, providing a relaxed and whimsical feel. Display a collage of various different sizes and styles of frames to create an eclectic and visually interesting gallery. Don’t try to achieve symmetry here. Create a more organic, sculpture-like composition instead.

Bold with Colours

Pops of indigo, turquoise, magenta, red, and even hot pink can be used to brighten up a room. Choose a bold, bright colour for the walls, as long as it is grounded with natural elements such as wood, leather, and natural floor coverings. A mostly neutral colour on the walls will allow for bold colour accents to pop and different patterns to complement each other.

Updated & Vintage

Wallpaper can provide texture and both an updated and vintage feel. Richly textured pillows and textiles can provide the same. Trees and branches can be incorporated to bring earthiness into a room, stand in for a sculpture, and offset more clean and sleek items such as pottery and glass bottles.

Textures and surfaces should be mixed and matched: teak, gold, and lacquer can be mixed with rough-hewn wood, antique bronze and warm fabrics. Mix and match from various cultures and times in history: an antique Chinese rug can complement a modern African wall hanging. Bohemian chic is, above all, eclectic and fun!
