Each new year brings a fresh palette of trendsetting colours that set the tone both on the fashion runway and in home decor. Just ahead of 2013, we're already seeing a lot of blues and greens in many vibrant shades and hues.

When we think of blue and green, we often picture traditional colours like cyan blue and forest green. However, there are endless variations of each colour to choose from, so there's absolutely no reason to limit yourself to any one tone or intensity.

On the contrary, try to combine several hues and shades of the chosen colour. In doing so, you will obtain multiple layers and textures throughout the room, which will in turn make the space more vibrant and interesting. When we try too hard to match shades with exacting precision, the final result can sometimes feel too formal or passive, resulting in a room that looks stiff and not very inviting. When softer hues are chosen, the use of patterns can add detail but still keep it calm.

Another way to incorporate these colours is by introducing a piece of furniture, artwork or a rug in each shade. This will instantly add a more modern feel to the room while keeping it neutral and calm. For instance, a vivid green sofa and chaise combined with vibrant blue drapes is sure to make a statement in any space.

A simple way to integrate blues and greens to a space is by painting. A fresh, bold shade of either colour will add instant drama to a room and really make it come alive. Opt for the PANTONE 2013 colour : emerald green. This colour inspire balance and harmony, and add a vintage yet elegant touch to a room.
