Having family and friends over for Christmas dinner is always a pleasure. However, depending on the number of guests you're planning to invite, it can sometimes be quite a challenge to fit everyone in your dining room comfortably. So, will it be 6, 12, 25 guests? Here are some practical tips on how to adapt your dining room layout according to the size of your dinner party!

An intimate dinner: 6 guests

Six guests are relatively easy to accommodate. To create a cosy, intimate setting, a round table is your best option. If you don’t have one, an outdoor garden table draped in a crisp, white floor-length linen tablecloth will instantly add glamour and elegance.

Concentrate on decorating the center of the table; candles and festive decorations will do the job nicely and further strengthen the cosiness factor. Depending on the space available in the room, consider adding a small Christmas tree to complete your seasonal decor.

Christmas gathering: 12 guests

If you're hosting a party of twelve, you really need an oblong or rectangular table that can be expanded to accommodate a greater number of guests. Look for tables that aren’t more than 34" wide. This will allow you plenty of room for getting in and out. As long as chair styles repeat at least once, you can use seating from all over the house.

Add drama by replacing your everyday chandelier with a bold and highly decorative light fixture, just for the holiday season. Think bling or rustic; both are great themes for Christmas. It will become a conversation piece and really define the table since there won’t be room for much more than a few candles down the center.

Buffet: 25 guests

Most of us don’t have sufficient room to seat a group of twenty or more people as the chairs and tables take up too much floor space. Now's the time to think outside the lunchbox! Adapt your menu to include traditional fare, but served in the form of finger foods or on small plates so that full sit-down, knife-and-fork seating isn’t necessary. Small tin cups or decorative cupcake papers are perfect for preparing portions. Also, place the food on trays that can be circulated around.

For decorations, go with a festive cocktail party theme! On each table, place different shades of large, brightly coloured glass balls in tall cylindrical vases. In terms of furniture, rent a few round, bar-height bistro tables that people can stand around comfortably while eating -  so that you can enjoy your party, too!
